THE CHALLENGE
Long history of R.T.T failure in orthopaedics
No local clinician engagement
Loss of work to the private sector
Trauma commitments impacting elective lists
WHAT DID WE DO?
Set up a local group of orthopaedic consultants
Agreed in sourcing contract to flexibly use excess capacity (theatres and beds) at two hospital sites
From 0 to 100 patients operated on pcm
Over 250 people (nurses, physios, surgeons, anaesthetists, healthcare assistants and admin) engaged in
out-of-hours activity
WHAT DID WE ACHIEVE?
30% reduction in total number of patients waiting
10% R.T.T improvement
50% reduction in total number of incomplete pathways
Patient satisfaction >95%
Significantly improved relationships between clinicians and hospital management
Allowed NHS Trust to repatriate work from private sector
